Cornish digital health company Ultramed has been honoured with a King’s Award for Enterprise in recognition of its excellence in medical innovation.
Announced today (Friday 21 April) following a recommendation from the Prime Minister, Ultramed is one of 148 organisations nationally to be recognised with the prestigious accolade.
Ultramed was established in 2014 by co-founders Dr Paul Upton and Alan Sanders, who have pioneered a digital health app called MyPreOp.
It is the market leading digital preoperative assessment solution in the UK being used in over 20 health trusts and a sibling product, MyEndo, is used at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.
The MyPreOp app allows patients awaiting a procedure to complete their preoperative assessment online from anywhere using their smartphone, computer, or other compatible device.
Since up to 50% of patients no longer need to visit the hospital before their operation, the innovative solution is reducing patient waiting room times and frees up nurses who can complete other tasks – creating time and efficiency savings for both clinicians and patients.
The company has benefited from support from various organisations championing eHealth innovation in Cornwall. These include Acceleration Through Innovation (ATI), a Cornish business support programme led by the University of Plymouth and funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
“I am immensely proud of what the team at Ultramed has achieved. We have benefited from multiple sources of advice, guidance and grant funding to support our innovative developments. The ATI programme supported our early development without which I have no doubt we would not have been so successful,” said Dr Paul Upton, Co-Founder & CEO at Ultramed, which now employs 14 people from its registered address at the Tremough Innovation Centre.
“We are thrilled for Ultramed. They are an exemplar of the quality eHealth innovation emerging from Cornwall’s fast-growing digital tech cluster. Never has there been a more exciting time for Cornish enterprise,” says Jo Hancock, ATI Programme Manager.
The King’s Awards for Enterprise are presented for outstanding achievement by UK businesses in the categories of innovation, international trade, sustainable development and promoting opportunity through social mobility.
The Award programme is the most prestigious business award in the country, with successful businesses able to use the King’s Awards Emblem for five years as a symbol of their company’s achievement.
